If you heard the words “medical dog” you could have a number of different thoughts. Some people might look confused, others might look amused thinking you’re pulling their leg. Yet others might try in vain to find out what it really means, and some people might even believe you’re referring to the growing popularity of using medical dog tags as jewelry. For my part however, if I hear the words medical dog mentioned I immediately think of the giant Saint Bernards who gained fame by rescuing unfortunate travels from dangerous snow bound situations.
Probably no one has ever called the Saint Bernard a medical dog, though that is the picture that always comes to mind. These gentle beasts are popular with many people and have long been considered a family dog. They love children, and can live peaceably with other animals as well. They love as much attention as they can get and are very affectionate.
As a medical dog in the present day, the Saint Bernard isn’t much utilized, but in the days when they were bred especially for the purpose of coming to the aid of people in need, the Saint Bernard was in full demand. The greatest and most well known of these dogs was a Saint Bernard medical dog named Barry.
The earliest Saint Bernard breed was bred with a short, glossy coat which made it easier for them to stay in the freezing weather conditions, whereas the latter breed of Saint Bernard with the Newfoundland mix sported a longer coat. This was unsuited to the prevailing weather conditions as their shaggy coats would always be full of icicles. This ruled them almost instantly as a good breed of medical dog, and the original short haired Saint Bernard was kept for this purpose.
If you’re getting a Saint Bernard medical dog for your family, you need to realize that they grow very large and very fast. So you’ll need to have somewhere that your dog can stay without tearing your house up into shreds. You’ll also need to be able to give it enough nutrition during its formative growth years as these medical dogs need to be kept nourished constantly to help in their massive bone growth.
As a family dog, the Saint Bernard loses much of the need for it to be a medical dog, but don’t close that door just yet. These dogs are very intelligent and will rush to your aid if there is something amiss. Much as they used to in the early days of the 17th century.
You can picture it in your mind. The great Saint Bernard making his way through the treacherous snowed in passes to save unwary travelers from a plight of certain death. And don’t forget to add the small cask of brandy around the Bernard’s neck. That adds the finishing touch to your mental picture of the great medical dog, the Saint Bernard on his medical rounds.

Kitten Care
Your little girl has been asking for a kitten ever since her friend down the street got one and you’ve come to the point where it’s getting hard to resist her pleading little eyes. So you give in quite easily and take her down to the pet store, because let’s face it, you had always wanted a kitten when you were smaller as well. Before you actually go and get your kitten however, you might first want to consider what type of kitten you want. Sure they all look adorable with their big eyes when they’re still very young, but you have to realize that they’ll grow one day and you will have to live with your choice. Dog Rescue
There are some instances where dogs need to be taken away from their owners as these people have proved to be neglectful and sometimes abusive pet owners. To help get these innocent animals to safety there are different types of dog rescue groups. These various groups are comprised of professionals in the animal world like vets, animal handlers, and dog walkers.
When these people are informed about a neglected dog they begin the dog rescue process. To make sure that the owners will not cause any problems sometimes the local police will be informed. Once the dog rescue has been accomplished the team heads back to a dog shelter.
At the shelter one of the dog rescue team will gain the animal’s trust and the process of settling the dog for the duration of its stay will begin. The first part of the dog rescue is to see to the various health aspects of the dog. This means that the dog must be cleaned up carefully so that any wounds or injuries will not be further aggravated. Once the dog has been cleaned and carefully groomed the vet at the dog rescue will see what the injuries need to be healed.
This process has to proceed very carefully as the dog will be unsure of its surroundings and will be ready to defend itself. Once the various wounds and injuries have been looked after, a nutritious meal will have to be planned. This way any malnutrition will soon disappear and the dog will soon begin to look healthy.
The kennel where the dog will stay while it is at the dog rescue centers will be a temporary home. As soon as a foster family is found the dog will be moved to stay with the foster family. It is from these foster families that the dogs will learn to trust humans and also become sociable animals.
While the dog is with the foster family the other training factors of dogs are begun. These training periods will be conducted with love and care so that the dog begins to enjoy learning all of its new tricks and commands. Once the dog has fully adapted to being a member of a family the dog is ready for adoption.
The various applicants who come to the dog rescue will see happy and healthy dogs just waiting to be adopted and taken home. For a previously neglected, abused or malnourished dog the best place to start a new future can be found in a dog rescue.
